Craft description:
Phonetic Alphabet:
The NATO phonetic alphabet is like a special code. Each letter of the alphabet is assigned its own unique word, which helps ensure clarity in communication — even when sounds are distorted or hard to hear. For example, “A” is “Alpha” and “B” is “Bravo.” This system is used in the military, aviation, and many other fields to avoid confusion.
Rationing in Wartime:
The war disrupted trade and farming, leading to shortages of essential goods, especially food. To ensure everyone got a fair share, the government introduced rationing. Daily life was transformed as people adapted to eating less, finding creative ways to cook with limited supplies. Campaigns encouraged citizens to avoid food waste and grow their own vegetables, with the famous “Dig for Victory” slogan (later popular in World War II, but first introduced in WWI). This project helps children explore how rationing shaped everyday life and resilience during wartime.
Solar Powered Helicopter:
Building a solar-powered helicopter model is both fun and educational, giving children the chance to design, construct, and watch their creation come to life! Alongside the craft, it links to history: in 1942, the British government commissioned the construction of several hundred “Hoverfly” helicopters — the UK designation for the Sikorsky R-4. This became the world’s first mass-produced helicopter, and the first used by the Royal Air Force (RAF) and Royal Navy for rescue missions and operations. This project blends science, engineering, and history in one exciting build.
