The scale of these artworks was remarkable—a single room in a Roman townhouse might need more than 100,000 tesserae! With this mosaic project, children can explore the incredible artistry and effort that went into these designs, while crafting their own miniature version.

Colosseum Build:
The Romans used arches in aqueducts to carry water and in monumental structures like the Colosseum. Arched bridges worked by distributing compression forces through the arch into the supporting piers, with abutments keeping the structure stable. This Colosseum build activity gives children hands-on experience with Roman engineering, helping them understand the strength of arches while recreating one of Rome’s most iconic landmarks.

Roman Oil Lamp:
In southwest Britain, the Romans discovered a natural hot spring, which they believed had healing powers. They built the famous baths at Aquae Sulis—known today as Bath—where oil lamps would have been a common feature inside.
